The Sabrient Earnings Busters Q4 is up 4.05% since October 1.  Its top five include SAVE +25.40%, WOR +16.46%, EPL +13.78%, BC +12.06%, and CTRX +9.52%.  Seventy-five percent of the 20 stocks are in positive territory.

You know by now that the Fed last week opted not to begin tapering its quantitative easing (i.e., buying of Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities), primarily for two reasons, I believe. First, rapidly rising long-term interest rates were already starting to hurt the recovering housing market (and the resulting wealth effect).

Today, with no new economic data, the market struggled through its third consecutively negative day of trading after a six-day winning streak.  What’s the difference?  We have traded a dubious, yet serious, problem in Syria for a much more tangible, and perhaps less solvable battle, among Congress.

Did you buy a market index call option in advance of the FOMC announcement on Wednesday? Maybe a straddle? Or did you at least hold pat on long positions knowing that you held an implicit “Fed put” against any meaningful downside? It seems like many investors did one of these, as markets have been strong in advance of today’s announcement.

Needless to say, the news headlines have been dominated by the ongoing saga of President Obama posturing against Syrian dictator Assad and his chemical weapons arsenal. Who’d have thought that Russia would emerge as the cool head in the mix? They must be basking in the limelight -- an unfamiliar role for them.

Earnings season is now officially underway, but the Fed is still holding the limelight, as traders anxiously awaited on Wednesday the FOMC minutes from the June 18/19 meeting. Although several members are pushing to begin tapering off this fall on asset purchases (bonds and mortgage-backed securities), which spooked the markets, in fact it now appears that the controlling opinion is that the U.S.

The market enthusiasm generated by the positive employment report on Friday carried over to today.  The rally in Technology stocks continued from last week, but Financials did even better.  With the Nikkei and FTSE both closed, the off-shore action ended slightly more positive than negative.  We had no domestic reports today in what will be a quiet week of economic news with only Thursday’s Initial Jobless Claims and Wholesale Inventories Reports, followi

Bulls have regained their footing and recruited some reinforcements, as the S&P 500 on Wednesday powered right through its 5.5-year intraday high of 1576 on increased trading volume to set a new record of 1589.

I was watching the ABC World News the other evening, and I was struck by the commercials they ran. The target demographic is obviously an older crowd (and since I was watching, I guess that includes me). Advertised products within the short 30-minute newscast addressed a variety of age-related ailments like low-T, erectile dysfunction, overactive bladder, constipation, hemorrhoids, and loose dentures.
