QE3, ECB or Bust

Well, perhaps not literally, but it is high time that the Central Banks started following up on their statements with action. How many times have we heard “We will do whatever it takes to…” or “We have a number of choices to make regarding getting the economy going ….”  Can we please do one or two of those things?   Right now, getting Europe back on track is mandatory to avoid a catastrophic dismantlement of the euro.  And with withering domestic economic numbers, it is time for more action and less talk from our Fed Chairman.

JP Morgan (JPM) managed to not only finesse their loss in Q2 from the London Whale trade to slightly less than $5 billion but also save the S&P 500 from its seventh consecutive day of losses. But the smell from the Barclay-led LIBOR fiasco is spreading across the ocean and renewing concern about regulatory actions against major U.S. banks and hence the growth of the economy as well.

Its earnings season again!  Q2 results began today with a so-so report from Alcoa (AA), but they will end the week with much awaited reports from JP Morgan (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC).  To be fair, the market began the week on the tail end of a trio of bad stories, a not-so-dynamic duo of emerging stories from the banking sector, and a single focus on the upcoming election.

The markets opened up today on the heels of last week’s positive developments in Europe. Unfortunately, Manufacturing ISM came in unexpectedly low at 49.7 versus an expected 52.2, which was down sharply from last month’s 53.5.  The market quickly gave up those early gains; the S&P 500 and the Dow took a small loss while the NASDAQ held onto a small gain.

It is fairly clear that what the market wants is a solution, or more likely, an entire truckload of solutions, to the issues that have polarized the globe. I hope you’ve noticed that the market passionately hates uncertainty!  The market’s behavior of the last few weeks speaks to this attitude.

The market did rebound last week, but it’s not much to brag about. Large-cap Value led the style/caps, up a paltry 1.42%, while Mid-cap Value dropped a tad, down -0.11%. It’s worth noting that Large-cap Value led not only last week, but last month and the last 3 months (see market stats). While it hasn’t been that great over the past 3 months, it has been the best of the worst.

The S&P 500 closed today at 1309, down well over 1%. The NASDAQ closed down nearly 2%.  In light of relative valuations and current global prospects for the past six months, the question begs an answer: Why?  Let’s begin with an overview of the results of the past week.

Today, the market sold off as much as a full percent before recovering to a slight loss at the close.  At midday, it was off more than 10% from its high in April despite the solid quarterly earnings added in Q1. Factory Orders (-0.6%) were well below the expected number (+0.1%), continuing a worrisome trend that began last week when every major economic number disappointed: Consumer Confidence, Initial Jobless Claims, GDP 1st qtr.

Last week was horrible, while today was quite good, albeit on low volume.  What happened?  Let’s review the facts.

Last week, the S&P 500 dropped over -4% to close Friday at the key support at 1295, off nearly -8% from its April high.  Mid-cap Growth was the worst style/cap, down -6.2%.  The best was Large-cap Value, off -4.3%.

A weekend of more election surprises in Europe, as a socialist candidate won a key state vote in Germany, threatening Prime Minister Angela Merkel‘s stance on austerity in the Eurozone. The Greek “leadership” has all but abandoned hope of forming a new elected government, likely requiring yet another vote.
